D7 - USN vs Yen Vien Railyard

Page history last edited by Si Tyler 13 years, 5 months ago

We played D7 again yesterday using the "proper" rules as opposed to the amended set we used for Newbury.

My son and I plotted the raid targets and had laid out the defenders as per the Miniatures Game walkthrough.

The DRV had 8 SAMs located but with Radar Off and rolled a 6 on the AA chart adding 4 Medium and 1 Light AAA Concentration.  We placed three of these (two near Haiphong, one next to Yen Vien.

Rolling for possible USN targets we selected Yen Vien Railyard (luckly AAA placement then!).  The transfer to table took about 15 minutes (as we already have all the targets and AAA made up they are all labelled on the base for quick set up. Keeping the kit in one box is also helpful.

Managed to take more photos than previously but it is too easy to get immersed into the game and forget to take a shot of a critical event.

The overall playing surface. Yen Vien is just on the outskirts of Hanoi in the far corner.  7 SAM battalions are deployed

Area around Hanoi defended by 3 SAM Battalions and an additonal AAA concentration

Close up of Haiphong defended by 3 SAM Battalions and an additional AAA Concentration

US Raid Plotting completed.  The raid will skirt around Thai Binh, turn west before realigning North to hit the target before heading east then back toward sthe entry point.  This removed the threat of  the Haiphong defences is that they couldn't fire but may get an acquistion.  The Iron Hand mission then has the job of clearing the centre of the table on the way in.  The SAMs to the West of Hanoi might just have to be left alone and the raid take their chances as they have enough to deal with already.

Iron Hand mission enters the table accompanied with a MiGCAP F-4.  DRV defenders are starting to take to the air with a Red Bandit just lifting from Kien An. Red Crown reports more MiGs lifting from Phuc Yen in the Hanoi area and another  flight airborne in the area of Hai Doung (MiG Orbit)

Turn 3 and the MiG from Kien An is being hunted down by the MiGCAP but in the clutter neither the F-4 Radar or visual searching has located the Bandits.

Still Turn 3/4 the Iron Hand begins to manoeuvre to wards the SAM Battalions, a second Red Bandit is approaching

End of Turn 4.  The F-4 MiGCAP finally locates the MiG-17 Flight.  The other threat thankfully was a false alarm only to be replaced with a new threat from Phuc Yen.  SAMs have begun to light up with the SAM Battery south of Hanoi gaining partial acquistion on one of the A-4 SEAD flights, who have turned away keeping out of range and sending in the other SEAD.  Both are looking to get in the position for another  lofted ARM.  The first shot has gone adrift with no reported damage on the SAM.

Unfortunately we didn't finish the game.  We played the first 5 turns and game set up in about an hour.  The Strike Mission would come on next turn (Turn 5).  Deeper strikes into the Hanoi region probably need some more time to clear the route by the Iron Hand but again a good game played cooperatively with card driven defender.  The SAM/MiG deconfliction needs some work as it is too easy to let the MiG follow the solo rules then realise you cannot engage an acquired target with a SAM.
